All Natural Dog Food

What's a good brand of dog food besides Wellness?

I need a good brand of healthy dog food. Im gonna start buying Aiden’s dog food so he can eat healthier. Right now he eats what my parents buy, because they pay for it. Im gonna work for my dad, so I will have my own money to pay for what Aiden needs. Im gonna take over his food and vet expenses.

I would like to feed him Wellness because it gets good feed back on here, but no one sells it around here.

So here are the brands sold in my area

Authority

AvoDerm Natural

Bil-Jac

Blue Buffalo

By Nature

Castor & Pollux

Eukanuba

Iams

Nature’s Recipe

Nutro Max

Nutro Natural Choice

Nutro Ultra

Pro Plan

Purina

Purina ONE

Royal Canin

Science Diet

Out of all of those what would you recommend?

What do you feed your dogs?

Thank you

**I feed raw, but here’s my review of the brands you listed**

Authority – Unknown.. but I wouldn’t buy it because they are not willing to share the ingredients in the food.

AvoDerm Natural – It’s okay, not the best but not the worst. DO NOT get the vegetarian formula, though.

Bil-Jac – This isn’t as bad as Beneful, but it’s still not a good dog food.

Blue Buffalo – Great brand of dog food, but it’s too rich for some dogs.

By Nature – Very similar to AvoDerm Natural, an okay food but it’s got a lot of grain and not much meat.

Castor & Pollux – Another good brand, a little more meat than AvoDerm Natural/By Nature.

Eukanuba – This is another brand that isn’t as bad as Beneful, but it’s not good and is overpriced.

Iams – Similar to Eukanuba, bad ingredients but isn’t too overpriced.

Nature’s Recipe – A good food, about the same amount of meat as AvoDerm Naturals/By Nature.

Nutro Max – The lowest quality sub-brand of the Nutro line, not a good food.

Nutro Natural Choice – The mid quality sub-brand of the Nutro line, hardly any meat, not something I’d ever consider feeding.

Nutro Ultra – The highest quality sub-brand of the Nutro line, better than the other two, but I wouldn’t recommend it (not because of the ingredients, the ingredients are good, but because of the fact that Nutro has a lot of recalls).

Pro Plan – Not a good food, not the lowest Purina sub-brand but it’s not a high quality food.

Purina – Any brand of food with the Purina label is not a good food.

Purina ONE – A little lower quality than Pro Plan, still not a good food.

Royal Canin – No, definitely not a good food. Has tons of corn and is way overpriced.

Science Diet – Same as Royal Canin, filled with corn & overpriced.

Blue Buffato is supposed to be really good. All the vet techs and veterinarians I work with talk about it.

  3. Kat says:

Out of those? I’d recommend the Blue Buffalo. Only problem is that it can be a little too rich for dogs with sensitive digestive systems. We feed our dogs (and cats) Taste of the Wild. You can get it for $45 or less per 30lb bag and it’s really the highest quality food in its price range.

Castor &Pollux is what we planned to feed our dog, but an employee told us to get Wellness. It got good reviews on Petco.com

    The ones I hate:

    Science Diet
    Iams
    Purina
    Purina ONE
    Pro Plan
    Royal Canin
    Nutro
    Eukaneba

    Ones I love:

    Blue Buffalo
    Authority
    Nature’s recipe

You don’t have many good choices, I’d say the best is Blue Buffalo

I’ve heard good things about Evo, but my blog also lists a few more holistic brands (I keep meaning to update it more often), which you can check out here: http://forpetsandanimals.blogspot.com

I used to work for for a dog food company, Kumpi dog food is by far the best dog food out there and it can be delivered. They do have a web site if you want to learn more. The only other dog food the vet told me to use was Costco brand dog food.

  8. oregano13 says:

Of those, I would choose the Blue Buffalo. It is probably the highest quality and with the best reputation.

most definatly blue buffolo, second id say is natures recipe

    I feed my dog ACANA.
It’s a lower protein version of Orijen.
    Because she is a Pug.
    & pugs gain weight easily.
So extra protein wouldn’t be too good.

Also, it has no grains, or wheat !
because once again, pugs usually or are prone to have sensitive skin.
    & wheat/grains are a high allergy ingredient.
Also, chicken can sometimes be a high allergy ingredient.

It really depends on your dog.
    Every dog is different.

    Iams is horrible.
    Any commercial brand is horrible.
    Well, I wouldn’t say HORRIBLE.
    But it isn’t good.
    Stay away from those.

Blue Buffalo is a good one I know of.
Also, Natures Recipe, By Nature, Science Diet is O.K, not amazing. But better than Iams/Eukenuba.

Please look at the first ingredient on the bag. Or all of the ingredients.
This is a list of stuff you SHOULD NOT see in the list of ingredients on the back of the bag of dog food.
    http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=badingredients

Also, here is a site that may be helpful.
You can see the ingredients & stuff.
& brands, & what star they are rated.
    http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/

    Hope this has helped.

    P.S.
The better food may be more expensive.
But you have to think about the money you will save in vet bills later on.
Trust me, I volunteer at an Animal Hospital.
& you wouldn’t believe all the "emergencies" & walk-ins because of the type of food that is fed.
Today a cat came in because the owners took her off of the Urinary Tract food he was on claiming it was too expensive.
But now she is paying about 300 dollars because he had to come in & get flushed out & unblocked.
Not fun for you OR the cat/dog/any animal.
So think of 300 dolars split up into how much the food is.
Instead of 300 dollars all at once when you least expect it. & sometimes don’t have it.
I have been in that situation but thankful for friends & family who are helpful.

Choosing the right food is good.
So good for you trying to step up & do right for the dog.
    =]
    P.S.
you can e-mail me, if you have any other questions or concerns.

When looking for a food you want to stay away from by-products(heads, feet, intestines, etc.), ground yellow corn (filler and allergen), and any artificial flavors or colors. None of Nutro’s products have any of these ingredients. All of their foods are all natural and have added vitamins and minerals. Nutro has some of the highest levels of essential fatty acids (Omega 3 & 6) on the market. These fatty acids help keep your dogs skin healthy, his coat shiny, and also reduce shedding. I personally feed my little girl Nutro Ultra. This is Nutro’s holistic food. It is packed with super foods to help with your dog’s immune system, hips & joints, healthy heart, brain function, vision, etc. My dog loves it! But it just depends on what you are looking for in a food.
